Wonderful vivid memories of that eventful day. Such wonderful times lots of bartering lots of smiles school buses with a VW vans mounted on the top of them. I have a review on one of the shows. I remember Jerry wearing pigtails. The Stella blue was one of those light-bulb moments. Glassbergs copy was worn slam out.

I'm not exactly sure, this is the second time I post this picture within the last month or so with hopes that someone would identify it.

OK. We can do this. The first step is to post it so folks can actually look at it while speculating thoughtfully :-)

Well, OK, that's a pretty massive pic. Sorry. But so much better for detective work! Maybe someone can even read those stickers.

Time: spring or fall.

Guy's clothes: I recall dashikis, top hats and overalls from late 70s. But one guy has dreads, which to me is a probable later-era giveaway. (Mid 80s and up. Others may remember differently, though; there were probably regional variations.)

Women: Short hair also means mid 80s or later IMO. Ditto the outfit in the middle; I wouldn't think pre-84ish.

So, mid 80s or later ...

Anyone got a list of Hampton shows from then and/or more insights into photo dating?

edit -- my husband says March or early April based on the trees ... It's Virginia, so in October there'd still be leaves.

Wow these are great replies. It could be possibly April 1983. I remember several shows being overcast 79 it was drenching rain 83 may of been rainy as well. April hmmmmm?. I think were getting closer folks!

Dashikis and birkenstocks - and deadheads wondered why people laughed at them derisively.

dreads on white guys - yea, i also worship a brutal ethiopian dictator that used forced starvation as a political ploy.

Hey, I like dashikis, birks and dreads. Don't see any birkenstocks there, though; just hiking shoes. At least as far as I can tell. Also, c'mon, you can't tell if he's white or not from a few inches of neck.

Here is a list of all the shows at the Hampton Coliseum:

5/4/79 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
5/2/80 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
5/1/81 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
4/9/83 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
4/13/84 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
4/14/84 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
3/21/85 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
3/22/85 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
3/19/86 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
3/20/86 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
3/21/86 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
3/22/87 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
3/23/87 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
3/24/87 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
10/8/89 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
10/9/89 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
3/5/92 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA
3/6/92 Hampton Coliseum Hampton VA

My guess is that it is one of the shows between '85-87 or possibly '92. These are all March shows so the weather would have been warm enough to go without a coat but the trees have not blossomed yet. It's southern Virginia. The trees still have leaves the first week of October and at least have blossomed by April. I don't think i see anything that says its the '90s. So i would go with the mid-80s shows.

When did the police start using that yellow tape to block off areas?

Yeah, and the Cherry Blossom Festival starts in late March, with peak bloom in early April. Definitely trees have all budded. March seems like the best bet. So that'd make it sometime in 85-88, with Sambonk's helpful additions complicating it further.

3/26/88
3/27/88
3/28/88

Darned band, playing so many shows. And here I thought it'd be an easy catch.

If you blow up the pic, it appears that several of the people is the background are wearing acid-washed jeans. If that is the case, it would definitely have to be mid to late 80's...

Also I'm not exactly sure but the yellow tape mentioned earlier, it could be when they started cracking down a bit on the shakedown Street. Don't get me wrong Hampton was awesome for shakedown Street but the late 80s due to the excessive amount of heads not going to the show, some restrictions were in place. But obviously not the fountain :-) I got to go with Althea Rose our site designer specialists, and also the observation of the trees, I'm going for March 87 or March 88.
I can tell you where I got the picture. When I got my iPhone in which I'm speaking to you right now. I downloaded a Grateful Dead app it had several shows that I could stream as well as some photographs in which Hampton 92 ticket was shown Hampton 88 live picture was shown and this notable spaceship outdoor picture.

I went to all the Hampton (indeed, I think all Virginia - Norfolk, C'Ville, Richmond, Roanoke, etc) shows in the 80's and I don't recall the yellow police tape until late in the game.
